San Clemente finds spark to get past Los Alamitos
IRVINE – Kathleen Hartmann scored 15 points and Jessica DeGree added 10 as San Clemente shook off a cold start and took a 62-46 victory over Los Alamitos in a South Coast Classic tournament girls basketball game at Woodbridge High on Thursday night.
Los Alamitos scored the first four points of the game, but after a timeout the Tritons (3-1) closed the quarter on an 11-1 run, then scored the first nine points of the second quarter before the Griffins’ Samantha Nguyen hit a 3-pointer with 4:58 remaining. It was the first field goal for Los Alamitos in seven minutes.
“I thought we came out really slow the first four minutes,” said San Clemente coach Lacey Burns. “There was a timeout called and we had to refocus, and from then on out the girls stuck together and played real hard.”
Hartmann, who had missed her first four field goal attempts, hit a layup and a free throw late in the first quarter, then added a baseline drive and another layup early in the second.
“She was our leading scorer and attacked the basket well,” Burns said. “She attacked the basket well and was just tenacious on defense. Her defense led to her offense.”
Los Alamitos (7-1) trailed by 14 at the half and could get no closer than 11 points in the third. San Clemente answered that threat with a 3-pointer from Hartmann and two baskets from Gabby McGann, taking a 48-30 advantage with 3:15 to go in the quarter.
“We were really, really hot yesterday, and this is our seventh game in nine days, so I think fatigue set in a little bit,” said Los Alamitos coach Matthew Sargeant. “You know, you are hot one game and you are going to be cold the next.”
The Griffins, who were led by Neah Odom’s 14 points, take on Woodbridge on Friday at 7 p.m. at Woodbridge.
