Irvine honors Henigan, rolls over University
IRVINE - Terry Henigan didn't want much fanfare in his final regular-season game after 29 years as Irvine's football coach. But Henigan, who is retiring at the end of the season, got just that Friday night at Irvine.
Hundreds of former Irvine players showed up and formed a tunnel to cheer Henigan as he took the field before the kickoff.
Then, Henigan's final group of Vaqueros rolled to a 27-0 Pacific Coast League victory over University.
"It's not a Terry Henigan thing, it's just kind of an Irvine football celebration," Henigan said. "It's just unbelievable. I can't express how I feel, seeing all these guys here."
University coach Mark Cunningham praised Henigan in a pregame ceremony before the Trojans' home game.
"I'm appreciative of the fact that I've known him as long as I have, and had the opportunities to learned," Cunningham said.
Irvine (4-1, 7-3) settled the issue in the first half, taking a 21-0 lead at halftime.
Freshman DaVonte Young, who rushed for 262 yards and three touchdowns on 22 carries, broke the game open with a 92-yard TD run with 3:11 left in the second quarter.
University (1-4, 3-7) was led by Jordan Kemp, who rushed for 91 yards.
Irvine had already captured the Dennis Toohey Fence Post Trophy, which goes to the top team in Irvine. The Vaqueros accepted the trophy after the game for the second year in a row.
