Maurice Barber of Huntington Beach runs the ball for a big gain during Friday's game against Capistrano Valley.

Confident Huntington Beach rolls over Capo Valley

MISSION VIEJO - As music blared through the speakers during pregame warm-ups at Capistrano Valley High on Friday night, Huntington Beach quarterback Kai Ross was shaking his head from side to side as if to say there was no way his team was going to lose.

The 16th-ranked Oilers (6-5) proved the quarterback had the right to be a little confident.

Huntington Beach dominated No. 22 Capistrano Valley (8-3), 34-17, in a Southwest division first-round matchup. With the victory, the Oilers will play host to Tustin next week.

"We played well," Huntington Beach head coach Eric Lo said. "We ran the ball well when we had to, we scored quite a few touchdowns and did some good things. It's exciting to be moving on to the second round."

The star of the game for Huntington Beach was running back Bowen Breunig, who tore off runs of 33, 51 and 68 yards in the second half to power his way to a 202-yard rushing performance.

"We held it down," Breunig said. "We did our best, my offensive line made holes for days."

A 24-yard interception return for a touchdown by Maurice Barber in the first quarter was one of the big plays that helped stake the Oilers out to a 17-3 halftime lead.

After a 14-yard touchdown pass from Ross to Marco Valenzuela with 9:27 remaining in the fourth quarter, Huntington Beach found itself leading 31-3.

Matt Gordon came in at quarterback for Capo Valley in the third quarter to replace Mason Dossey, who was knocked out of the game with what appeared to be a shoulder injury.

Gordon passed for 111 yards and led two fourth-quarter scoring drives, but it was too little too late for the Cougars.

Now the Oilers will shift their focus to Tustin.

"They have a good running game," Ross said. "But I think we can stop it." We have a nice front four and some good linebackers, so I think we're ready for them."
