HUNTINGTON BEACH - Huntington Beach didn’t want its playoff chances to come down to a coin flip or hope for an El Toro loss.

It didn’t need to worry about either scenario.

The Oilers jumped to an 18-point lead at the half and went on to blow out Woodbridge, 45-3, in Sea View League action Friday night. (Full game stats.)

The victory secures Huntington Beach (3-2, 5-5) third place in league play and a spot in the CIF playoffs for the first time since 2006.

“When fate’s in your hands you need to take advantage of it and we did,” Huntington Beach coach Eric Lo said about avoiding possible tie-breaker situations. “We wanted to settle it on the field.”

The Oilers got a strong performance from running back Logan Emery, who rushed for 96 yards on 12 carries.

The senior also scored a 29-yard touchdown in the second quarter, carrying Woodbridge defenders on his back for nearly 5 yards to give the Oilers a 14-3 lead.

Huntington Beach put the game out of reach later in the second quarter as quarterback Sean Guiteconnected with Jon Ogilve from 35 yards out on a fourth-and-4 to extend the Oilers’ lead to 18 points.

Woodbridge (1-4, 1-9) forced Huntington Beach to punt on its first possession of the first half, but then the Oilers began to roll.

Huntington Beach blocked Joe Roberts’ punt in Warriors territory. That set up Guite’s 39-yard pass to Kalleer Roemer to put the Oilers up, 28-3.

A fumble by backup quarterback Max Neser, playing in place of Charlie Kelly, who was injured in the second quarter, set up the Oilers’ next score. Eric Chan booted a 40-yard field goal for Huntington Beach to give the Oilers a 31-1 lead.

“This is something that they’ve worked for, these seniors haven’t been a part of this since they’ve been at Huntington,” Lo said, as his team chanted ‘CIF, CIF’ in the background.

“So it’s huge for them. We’ve missed it the last couple of years and they were able to bring us here.”
