Troy vs. Sonora
FULLERTON - Kyle Smith's 21-yard touchdown pass to Manuel Carrillo with three seconds remaining lifted Troy to a 20-14 Freeway League victory over Sonora on Friday at Fullerton High.
The Raiders had taken a 14-13 lead with 1:05 left on a 45-yard flea-flicker touchdown pass from offensive tackle Bryan Jew to Ronnie Montague.
The Warriors, however, moved seven plays in less than a minute to the Raiders 21-yard line. On the final play, Smith lofted a pass into the end zone, and Carrillo outmuscled two defenders for the winning catch.
"I'm so ecstatic. It's such an intense feeling right now," Smith said. "It's the most exciting play of my high school career."
Carrillo was equally excited.
"It was the perfect pass from my best friend," said Carrillo, who had six catches for 84 yards.
With one game left in the regular season against Fullerton, the Warriors (3-6, 2-2) control their playoff destiny.
A pair of DeAngelo Bonner touchdown runs gave the Warriors a 13-0 lead midway through the third quarter, but Sonora (3-6, 1-3) battled back.
In the third quarter, a 832-yard TD pass from Derek O'Hanlon to Chris Eko cut the Troy lead to 13-7. Then with just over a minute to play, O'Hanlon rolled right and threw back to Jew, who caught the ball and tossed a perfect 45-yard TD to Montague, giving the Raiders a 14-13 lead.
