Sunny Hills takes down No. 9 Sonora
FULLERTON – Sunny Hills on Friday went into its Freeway League game against a Sonora squad that had throttled a contending Troy team two days earlier.
Since Troy easily beat Sunny Hills in the league opener in December, the No. 9 Raiders figured to be the favorite over the Lancers.
Sunny Hills didn't see it that way.
Guards Tim Ahn and Ryan Tan scored 23 points to lead the Lancers to an 80-62 victory.
Ahn scored all his points from the field on five 3-point baskets, along with eight free throws.
Sunny Hills (17-5, 4-1) also held the Raiders (18-3, 4-1) to their second lowest scoring output of the season.

"I really thought it was the best defensive performance we've had all year long," Sunny Hills coach John Wooldridge said. "We didn't play hard the last two weeks ... Tonight we got back to where we needed to be."
Adam Marlow scored 17 to lead the Raiders and standout forward Jimmy Golden scored 10 before leaving the game with a sprained ankle early in the third quarter.
Trailing by 14, Sonora went on a mini 6-2 run early in the third, but Tan put an end to that with a pair of 3-pointers on consecutive possessions.
Sunny Hills closed the quarter on an 11-2 run to take a 21-point lead into the fourth.
With the first round of league games in the books, nothing is close to being decided.
Sunny Hills, Sonora and Troy – the teams predicted to contend for the top three places – are in a three-way tie for first.
"The Freeway League is really tough this year," Wooldridge said. "It's going to be a grind from here on out."
