Trabuco Hills too much for Fountain Valley, 28-7

SPECIAL TO OCVARSITY.COM

HUNTINGTON BEACH - An early lead disappeared as quickly as it came for Fountain Valley, which watched Trabuco Hills score the game's final four touchdowns and take Friday's nonleague contest, 28-7, at Huntington Beach High.

Mitchell Simonsen devastated the Barons defense, piling up 221 rushing yards on 32 carries. The Mustangs senior running back also scored touchdowns on runs of 17, 30 and 2 yards.

The final one came near the end of the third quarter to give Trabuco Hills (4-1) a three-touchdown cushion. By that time the Mustangs had recovered from a slow start when they fell behind, 7-0, in the first quarter.

Trabuco Hills played the second week in a row without starting quarterback Jonathan Newsom, who is likely to return for next week's game against San Juan Hills.

The Mustangs kick off South Coast League play the following week against San Clemente, Orloff said.

With victories over two Pac-5 teams heading into league play, Mustangs coach Scott Orloff said that his team is confident it can compete in the South Coast.

"We got off to a slow start but we did what we had to," he said. "Give credit to the defense. We held them in check after the early score. We're ready for South Coast League.

"I told the boys no one is going to be better than Santa Margarita. Maybe as good, but not better."

Fountain Valley (3-2) took advantage of a short field off a muffed punt and scored five plays later when Chris d'Entremont connected with Cristian Calvillo for a 13-yard touchdown reception on third down.

Trabuco Hills responded by rattling off an 11-play, 80-yard drive capped by Simonsen's 17-yard scoring run. The Mustangs broke the tie on their next drive, a six-play, 54-yard effort that Simonsen ended with a 30-yard touchdown burst.

Trabuco Hills carried a 21-7 lead into intermission after Garret Hartman finished the opening-half scoring with a 15-yard touchdown run.

After holding Fountain Valley to start the second half, Trabuco Hills opened its margin further with another 11-play, 80-yard drive as Simonsen scored his final touchdown of the night.

Fountain Valley's loss stopped a modest two-game winning streak. The Barons are off next week before visiting Newport Harbor for the start of Sunset League action.
