Football playoff predictions revealed
Fryer picks the O.C. teams that can win CIF titles.
Orange County is represented by top-seeded teams in four CIF-Southern Section football playoff divisions. The county has a few other teams that look good enough to win a CIF championship.
Edison is undefeated, and is the No.1-seeded team in the big, bad Pac-5 Division, which used to be called Division I before quasi-geographical names were applied to the 13 11-man divisions. Garden Grove also takes a 10-0 record into the playoffs as the No. 1-seeded team in the Southern Division. La Habra (9-1) is the top-seeded entrant in the Southwest Division, which it won the past two years, and St. Margaret's (9-1) is No. 1 in the East Valley Division.
Then we have Mission Viejo taking a 10-0 record into the Pac-5 Division, and Servite is there, too, at 9-1. Both are good enough to win it all.
Tustin is 9-1, and looking for a return to the Southwest Division final and another crack at La Habra, which is going for its third consecutive CIF championship. Laguna Hills, last year's Southern Division champion, takes a seven-game winning streak into the playoffs.
And who can stop St. Margaret's? The Tartans are going for a county-record fourth consecutive CIF championship. They are hot – the Tartans averaged 62 points a game while going undefeated in the Academy League.
The playoffs start Friday, with first-round games in the CIF-SS's 13 divisions. But before the games come the predictions.
Who is going to win? Nobody knows – but me. Hey, stop laughing.
