O.C. golfers place at AJGA tourney
A number of Orange County high school golfers turned in top performances Thursday at the Emerson Junior Golf Classic, an Open tournament put on by the American Junior Golf Association at Maderas Golf Club in Poway.
Among those was Los Alamitos' Esther Lee, who carded a 5-under 211 to take first, eight strokes ahead of Brea eighth grader Amy Lee (219).
Lilia Vu of Fountain Valley placed fourth with a 6-over 222 (79-73-70), and Beckman's Kaitlin Park took fifth (223). Mission Viejo's Amy Alston placed 12th at 229.
In boys competition, Santa Margarita sophomore Beau Hossler, who placed second after falling to Jonathan Sanders (Chatsworth) in a sudden death playoff for first. The 2010 All-County selection finished at 4-under-par 216.
"I've learned how to play well while in contention this week, especially on the back nine," said Hossler. "On No. 10 today I holed out for eagle, which put me in the lead at that point, but other than that I played pretty consistent."
Also turning in Top 20 finishes were Sunset League champion John Lee of Los Alamitos, and All-County first-team picks Jake Knapp (Estancia) and Ryan Tetrault (Villa Park).
Lee placed tied for tenth after carding a 3-over 219 (77-70-72). Knapp finished one stroke behind in 12th at 4-over 220 (78-68-74), and Tetrault tied for 16th at 6-over 222 (68-79-75).
