Newport Harbor surges into Tournament of Champions
Newport Harbor's No.1 ranked girls water polo team is riding a wave of momentum going into this weekend's Santa Barbara Tournament of Champions.
The Sailors have posted consecutive league victories against No. 2 Los Alamitos and No. 5 Edison.
While Newport Harbor (10-1) hopes to keep its run going, there are others waves on the horizon.
Standout center Kaleigh Gilchrist won't be available if second-seeded Newport Harbor makes Saturday's 4:35 p.m. final.
Gilchrist departs at 7:30 Saturday night from LAX with the U.S. junior surf team for a trip to the ISA world junior championships in New Zealand.
Gilchrist leads Newport Harbor with 39 goals.
But the good news for the Sailors is that Gilchrist will be available for a possible semifinal showdown against Los Alamitos on Saturday at 12:15 p.m. Newport Harbor, however, needs to win twice Friday.
