Los Amigos surges in second half to beat La Quinta
Game played at Bolsa Grande High.
GARDEN GROVE - For the first time since 2005, La Quinta took the field Friday night riding a two-game winning streak.
With the Aztecs leading by seven points at the half behind rushing touchdowns from quarterback George Martinez and running back Jon Rio, it looked as though they might win three in a row for the first time in nearly a decade.
Then Los Amigos woke up.
Riding the various extremities of quarterback/kicker Jose Gonzalez, the Lobos (2-4, 1-0) scored 24 consecutive points in the second half to beat the Aztecs, 31-14.
Gonzalez completed all five of his passes for 108 yards and two touchdowns, against the Aztecs (2-4, 0-1) was perfect on PATs and added a 42-yard field goal.
The Los Amigos defense also stepped up after the half, led by Isaac Tucker. The linebacker put constant pressure on Martinez and came up with a third-quarter sack.
"In the second half, he (Martinez) was getting happy feet and we had good pressure from both sides," Tucker said.
