La Habra rolls over Kennedy, 56-10
LA HABRA - After a slow start Friday night, La Habra erupted for six consecutive in a 56-10 victory over Kennedy in the first round of the CIF-SS Southwest Division playoffs at La Habra High.
After gaining 27 rushing yards in the first quarter, Highlanders tailback Joshua “Juice” Quezada got going in the second quarter.
The Fighting Irish (10-1) went ahead on a 26-yard field goal by Anthony Quezada, but La Habra quarterback Cody Clements found receiver Brett Bartolone, who beat his man for a 26-yard gain.
Quezada took over from there. First, he jitterbugged his way to the end zone from 24 yards out with 10:03 left in the second quarter. On the next play after a Kennedy punt, Quezada jumped over a defender along the sideline and went 39 yards for another score and a 21-3 lead.
This weekend, Joshua Quezada is making an official visit to the University of Utah.
“This game we really ran the ball to the outside,” Quezada said. “That was the key tonight.”
Kennedy (5-6) struggled without leading rusher D.J. Boulton and receiver Eli Pleasant.
It got to the Highlanders 29 on a fake punt, but an interception by safety Dominick Sierra killed the drive. Clements found Bartolone again for a touchdown, one of four by Clements.
On Friday night, La Habra travels to El Dorado to play at Bradford Stadium in the CIF-SS quarterfinals. In last season’s playoffs, the Highlanders beat the Golden Hawks, 23-14.
