Segerstrom edges Garden Grove
SANTA ANA -- Segerstrom used a solid running attack and to grind out a 28-21 victory over Garden Grove at Segerstrom High on Friday in the first round of the CIF-SS playoffs.
Garden Grove appeared headed toward the game’s first score after quarterback Chris Martinez ran 48 yards to the Jaguars’ 5 yard line in the first quarter. But on third and goal from the 4, Martinez’s pass was intercepted in the end zone by Segerstrom’s David Perkins.

Starting from their own 11, the Jaguars marched down the field in eight plays, including a 42 yard run by Eric Ramirez. Sonny Roa ran in from the Argonaut’s 3 yard line to put Segerstrom up 7-0.
After the teams traded punts, Martinez found C.J. Del Real for a 65 yard touchdown pass on the second quarter’s first play. Segerstrom then launched an 11-play scoring drive, concluding with Gabriel Roa’s 34 yard touchdown reception from Aaron Morales.
Late in the first half, Martinez tossed a 55-yard scoring pass to Tyren Anderson to even the game at 14-14.
Utilizing a no-huddle offense, Segerstrom marched 76 yards on just four plays to start the third quarter, including a 51-yard pass from Morales to Sonny Roa. Ramirez ran 4 yards for the go-ahead touchdown.
On their next drive, the Argonauts lost a fumble at the Segerstrom 24-yard line. The Jaguars then mounted another 76-yard touchdown drive to go up by two touchdowns.
