Thursday night was a night for some Sunset League stunners.
Newly crowned Edison made its first defense of the No. 1 ranking against Los Alamitos, and the pumped-up Griffins handed the Chargers a 23-19 defeat.
A crucial play of the game came late in the third quarter after Edison had kicked a field goal to cut Los Al's lead to 16-10. It looked like the Chargers had some momentum.
But the Griffins responded with a trick play. Griffins quarterback Clark Evans pitched it to Cody Perez, who lateralled back to Evans. Darryl Jenkins was wide open and Evans nailed him for a 63-yard touchdown and a 23-10 lead.
But the Griffins almost out-thought themselves in the closing seconds when trying to run out the clock. They took a safety, but left 3 seconds on the clock and gave Edison a legit shot at a Hail Mary.
Los Al ended up escaping with the victory.
Meanwhile, Fountain Valley pulled off a 22-21 upset over No. 9 Newport Harbor in another Sunset League game.
Kyle Middlebrooks scored on a 52-yard run with 30 seconds left to give the Barons the lead.
The Barons still had to sweat out Dillon Freiberg's 44-yard field goal try as time expired, but they got the victory.
So does undefeated Los Alamitos deserve to be ranked No. 1 in the county?
No. 2 Tesoro will have something to say about that when it takes on No. 8 San Clemente on tonight at San Clemente High. The Titans knocked off then-No. 1 Mission Viejo, 31-14, last week.
There are plenty of big games tonight, so come back to OCVarsity.com for all the action.
