San Clemente volleyball without two starters
The Tritons lose two starters to injuries as they enter the playoffs.
Metzger, the team’s starting setter, suffered a concussion after he hit his head against the metal pole that holds the net while reaching for a ball during the team’s season finale against Aliso Niguel on May 7. Metzger had also suffered a scratched retina on May 6 playing basketball.
Tritons coach Ken Goldstone said Metzger has experienced blurred vision and forgetfulness since the concussion. “Right now, he’s just trying to get his life together,” said Goldstone.
Metzger recently committed to the University of Hawaii, and is listed among the top senior setters in Orange County by OCVarsity.com. He is the younger half-brother of former San Clemente and UCLA volleyball standout Brandon Taliaferro.
Goldstone said junior Hudson Glover will fill in at setter for tonight’s match. Glover had been playing opposite all season, but plays setter for his club team - O.C. Riptides.
“Hudson is a very good all-around player,” said Goldstone.
Also out for tonight’s game is senior outside hitter Zach Teske, who has shin splints.
“That’s a huge loss,” said Goldstone. “We’re just not as deep at that position. Thank goodness I have three setters.”
Goldstone said freshman Dillon Hoffman will start tonight. He added both Metzger and Teske are questionable for Tuesday’s second round, if the Tritons win tonight.
