Mater Dei, Troy claim tournament titles
McQuin Baron made 15 saves and Kent Inoue scored four goals as Mater Dei's top-ranked boys water polo team defended its title at the Santa Barbara Invitational with an 11-6 victory against Loyola of Los Angeles in the finals Saturday.
The Monarchs (5-0) led, 5-4, at halftime and then outscored the Cubs, 4-1, in the third period.
Jon Walters added three goals for Mater Dei, ranked No. 1 in Division 1. Chancellor Ramirez collected three goals for Loyola, ranked third in Division 1.
The Monarchs also extended their Southern Section record winning streak to 53 matches and claimed an eighth consecutive regular-season tournament.
Baron, a 6-foot-8 junior, made 17 saves in a 13-4 victory against Agoura in the semifinals Saturday.
At the Riverside Invitational:
Troy 11, San Marcos 4: Joe Feaster scored six goals in the final at Sippy Woodhead Pool to help power the Warriors (5-0) to their first title in the Riverside Poly-host tournament. Troy claimed the tournament by defeating Santiago of Corona (10-6 in the semifinals) and San Marcos in back-to-back matches Saturday to avoid heat restrictions from the Fullerton district, Troy coach Justin Link said.
At the Jaguar Classic:
Woodbridge defeated San Juan Hills, 15-10, and Loyola B, 14-9, to claim the inaugural Segerstrom-host tournament.
At the Western tournament:
Lakeside of Lake Elsinore 13, Saddleback 11: The Roadrunners finished second in the 16-team tournament. Lakeside's Jacob Kaiser and Cameron McDiarmid were selected co-MVPs.
In nonleague:
No. 2 Newport Harbor 9, Coronado 8: Ryan Warde scored in the fourth quarter to give the host Sailors (2-0) a 9-7 lead. Warde and Andrew Silvers each finished with three goals for Newport Harbor.
