San Clemente goes to 5-0 in league
Kelsey Thornton matched her season-high with five goals, and goalie Kayla Colapinto made nine saves as San Clemente's girls water polo team took control of the South Coast League with an 8-4 victory at El Toro on Thursday.
The seventh-ranked Tritons improved to 5-0 in the Division 2 league, including 2-0 against No. 9 El Toro.
"It was a great team victory," San Clemente coach Logan Powell said in a text message. "The girls really wanted it. They worked hard and played great team defense."
San Clemente, tied for third in Division 2 with Agoura, also got two goals from freshman Cassidy Smithson.
Center Allison Skaggs scored three goals for El Toro (8-11, 3-2), ranked fifth in Division 2. Valerie Spezzaferri added five steals.
In a nonleague match:
No. 4 Foothill 12, No. 5 Laguna Beach 11: McKenna Mitchell scored on a backhanded shot off a pass from Ashley Zwirner with 1:11 left to lift the visiting Knights (17-3) past the Breakers (15-4).
Zwirner tied the score, 11-11, on a power-play goal with 2:38 left.
Mitchell finished with four goals. Foothill goalie Kelsey Roland had 15 saves.
