Late goals lift Troy against Sunny Hills
Troy senior Holly Smith scored two goals in the final two minutes of the game to lead the Warriors to a 7-6 Freeway League victory over host Sunny Hills on Tuesday.
Smith, who has signed with UC Santa Barbara, tossed in the go-ahead goal on a long lob shot with just under a minute remaining. She has 61 goals this season.
"I knew the goalie (Julia Vanderpool) was really good, so I went for the lob," Smith said. "I couldn't have asked for a better first round game."
Troy (11-6, 4-0), ranked sixth in CIF Division 4, will play host to Sunny Hills in the second round of league play, which could decide the league championship.
"It's important and sets the tone for the next time," Troy coach Jason Wilson said.
Sunny Hills senior attacker Amanda Solis scored four goals, breaking the Lancers' career goals record held by Alex Hoetken (325 goals). The record-breaking goal came on a long lob shot with 4:11 left in the fourth period to bring Sunny Hills within one goal, 5-4.
Solis now has 329 goals.
"She's very opportunistic and she'll find a way to score," Sunny Hills coach Keith Nighswonger said.
Both teams played tight defense in the first period, with Sunny Hills (17-5, 3-1), ranked fifth in Division 4, holding a 1-0 lead on a break-away goal by junior Ceci Lundy.
