Monjay's late goal lifts Northwood past Foothill, 10-9
Freshman Billy Monjay scored on the man-advantage with 2:13 left in the fourth period to lift Northwood's boys water polo team past host Foothill, 10-9, in a CIF Division 2 second-round playoff match Thursday night.
Monjay's only goal help send the Timberwolves (17-11) to Saturday's quarterfinals against the Montebello-Chaparral winner.
Foothill's Davis DeFontes tied the score, 9-9, with a goal with 3:16 left in the fourth.
Sophomore Jason Lee paced Northwood with three goals. Goalie Gavin Konstanzer added 11 saves.
DeFontes and Chris Brose each scored three goals for Foothill (11-17). Goalie Massimo Navarretta made 13 saves for the Knights, a semifinalist last season.
The match featured several players from SOCAL's 16-and-under club team that captured the bronze medal at the Junior Olympics in the summer.
Monjay and Lee were starters for Coach Andy Coffman's SOCAL team while Brose, Navarretta and Foothill's Chase Woollett also started. Northwood's John Hartshorne and Josh Hayashi also was part of the SOCAL team.

Corona del Mar 25, Great Oak 5: Kyle Trush and Ben Zepfel each scored four goals to lead the host and top-seeded Sea Kings (22-6), who will play host to Riverside Poly in the quarterfinals Saturday at 1 p.m. Riverside Poly edged Esperanza, 13-12, overtime.
Villa Park 17, Woodbridge 7: Eric Bungcag scored nine goals to vault the host Spartans (22-7) into the quarterfinals. They meet ML King on Saturday.
University 22, Bell Gardens 10: Eric Miller scored five goals at Woodbridge to lead the Trojans, who play the Long Beach Wilson-Murrieta Valley winner in the quarterfinals Saturday.
In Division 4 second round:
Troy 17, Rancho Cucamonga 7: Michael Franco and Eric Richens each scored four goals to lead the Warriors (23-7), who play Cerritos in the quarterfinals on Saturday. Troy defeated Cerritos earlier this season.
In Division 6 first round:
Valencia 13, Oxnard 4: Paul Schindler scored seven goals for the host Tigers, who play Oaks Christian in the quarterfinals Saturday.
Yorba Linda 10, Ramona 8: Taylor Van Ginkel scored six goals at Arlington to lead the Mustangs (23-7), who play top-seeded Beaumont in the quarterfinals on Saturday.
Tustin 16, Savanna 5: Gabriel John scored nine goals and Luis Martinez made 24 saves to lead the visiting Tillers (20-5) into the quarterfinals. The Tillers play the Rio Mesa-Villanova Prep winner.
Temescal Canyon 18, Western 6: The Pioneers fell in the first round and finished the season 17-11.
In Division 7 first round:
Ocean View 13, Arroyo Valley 11: The host Seahawks advanced to Saturday's quarterfinal. They will play host to Don Lugo.
