Segerstrom strikes late to beat Villa Park

OCVARSITY.COM

ORANGE – Segerstrom's boys soccer team entered Friday's CIF-SS Division 2 first-round playoff match against Villa Park with a plan to move the ball around as much as possible and to take advantage of its quickness.

The Jaguars' approach worked perfectly, as their quickness proved to be the deciding factor.

With the game a scoreless tie and seemingly headed for overtime, Segerstrom's Adrian Avila received a pass as he sprinted past defenders and he drove a shot by goalkeeper Brian Powell in the 88th minute to give the Jaguars a 1-0 victory at El Modena High.

"My philosophy is, if you create more opportunities than your opponent, eventually it's going to go in, and it did," said Jaguars coach Neil Stevenson, whose team improved to 11-11-2.

The goal was Avila's 15th of the season and moved the Jaguars into the second round.

They will face the winner of the Fullerton-Warner of Downey first-round game.

"I just got a good through-ball, and I already know how to finish one-on-one with the keeper. I just put it to the side (and) into the net," Avila said.

Daniel Quintanilla assisted on the goal.

Villa Park (12-7-2) applied pressure in the early moments of both periods but could not sustain the energy.

. Segerstrom controlled the time of possession for most of the match.

The Spartans' best opportunity to score came on a penalty kick for Adam Flores, but his attempt flew high and wide over the crossbar in the 50th minute.

Villa Park's Samuel Shackelford put three shots on goal in the first half, including a 40-yard free kick that skipped past Segerstrom defenders and off the right post.

Segerstrom keeper Raul Boiso did a tremendous job defending his goal.

He totaled four saves and Powell had six saves for Villa Park.

The Jaguars put 12 shots on goal, while the Spartans had nine.
