Gauta sets record in Loara's victory
ANAHEIM - Loara running back Howard Gauta set a school record for touchdowns as the Saxons pounded Katella, 42-14, in the final game of the regular season Thursday night at Glover Stadium.
Gauta piled up 188 yards on 10 carries and scored all four of his touchdowns in the first half for the Saxons (5-5, 1-4).
The scores gave Gauta 23 for the season, passing the previous Saxons record of 22 held by two players.
“I came out, played hard and did my best,” Gauta said. “I wanted to break the record, so I did.”
Coach Dean Lappin praised his running back after the game.
“He’s definitely a Division I talent,” Lappin said. “He can turn a broken play into a touchdown, and when he’s on, he’s as good as anybody at any level.”
Gauta showed his talent on his record-setting touchdown.
In the second quarter, Gauta was lined up at quarterback on the Saxons 26. The snap went off his right hand and flopped onto the turf a few feet away.
Gauta scooped up the ball as the defense for the Knights (2-8, 1-4) converged on him. He was tripped up by a defender but managed to stay on his feet and get to the other side of the field. He then turned the corner and sprinted down the sideline for a 26-yard TD.
“Just get in the end zone,” Gauta said. “That’s all that was in my head.”
