Garden Grove shuts out Beckman
GARDEN GROVE - Garden Grove coach Willy Puga couldn’t have asked much more from his team in its CIF Southern Division first-round playoff game Friday night.
The Argonauts jumped out to a comfortable lead, controlled both lines of scrimmage and shut out Beckman, 35-0, at Garden Grove High.

“We are getting better every week and I think we can still improve,” Puga said. “That is the scary thing.”
Garden Grove (9-2) scored right away. Sione Masoe capped a 10-play, 80-yard drive with a 15-yard touchdown run around the left side with 8:43 left in the first quarter.
It was one of two scores on the night for Masoe, who combined with brother Maze Masoe and C.J. Del Real for 202 yards on the ground.
Argonaut quarterback Angel Martinez got into the act with a 27-yard touchdown pass to Gabriel Carrillo on a fourth-down play to make it 14-0 with 3:15 left in the first quarter.
And Maze Masoe gave Garden Grove a 21-0 lead late in the half on a 1-yard plunge into the end zone.
The Argonaut defense did the rest. Garden Grove limited Beckman (3-8) to 29 yards in the opening half and intercepted two passes and recovered a fumble.
“We are playing great defense, but we are still leaving points out there on offense,” Puga said.
“I can’t wait for us to play the perfect game. Hopefully we are building up to that.”
Garden Grove will take on Segerstrom in the second round.
