Young leads way in Garden Grove blowout
GARDEN GROVE — Facing three consecutive opponents with only one victory between them, it might have been easy for undefeated Garden Grove to enter its game Thursday against winless Bolsa Grande a little disinterested.
The Argonauts were plenty interested, scoring on the first play and never looking back in a 54-6 Garden Grove League victory over the Matadors (0-7, 0-2).
Senior Sean Young led the way as Garden Grove (7-0, 2-0) built a 34-0 halftime lead. Young passed for two touchdowns and ran for two more. He also had a 55-yard interception return.
Young finished with six carries for 59 yards. He scored on runs of 9, 22 and 9 yards and had scoring passes of 56 yards to Josh Webb and 5 yards to Jacob Smith. He completed 8 of 15 for 141 yards.
Jesse Lozano scored from 43 yards on the opening play. His run followed a 51-yard kickoff return by Josh Sepulveda.
“We want to play Garden Grove football,” said Coach Joe Hay, whose team has been focused since the first game of the season when fullback/linebacker Kevin Telles died. “The guys have stayed healthy, knock on wood, but they’re real united. Everyone knows what this is about.”
