Santiago defeats Los Amigos in OT to share league title
The Cavaliers create three-way tie for Garden Grove League title.
The victory gave the Cavaliers (8-2, 4-1) their second consecutive league crown after a 29-year title drought. This time they shared the honor with Garden Grove (9-1, 4-1) and Los Amigos (5-5, 4-1).
Los Amigos will be the league’s No. 1 representative in the CIF playoffs as a result of coin flips conducted after Friday’s game. Garden Grove will be the league’s No. 2 representative in the playoffs, and Santiago will be the No. 3 representative.
But even the coin-flip result couldn’t dampen the Cavaliers’ spirits after ending Los Amigos’ bid for an undefeated run through the league schedule.
Hornsby found an unusually large hole and scored from 21 yards out on a dive play in the second overtime period, and Santiago’s defense kept Los Amigos 5 yards short of the end zone in its bid to answer.
“It feels great — nobody expected this to happen,” Hornsby said.
