GARDEN GROVE Raymond Huizar threw an interception on Pacifica’s first drive of the game. That certainly didn’t make Huizar think twice about throwing the ball the rest of the game, as he threw touchdown passes on each of the Mariners’ next four possessions and they defeated Costa Mesa, 34-0, in a CIF Southern Division opening round game Friday night.
Huizar did most of his damage in the first half by passing for 226 yards and the four touchdown passes. Huizar finished the game with 265 yards passing in only three quarters of work for the Mariners (8-2).
Huizar completed passes to six receivers and each touchdown pass went to a different receiver.
The Mariners running game controlled the second half of the game behind Luther Tolbert, who finished with a game-high 92 yards.
The Mariners defense did its job by keeping the Mustangs out of the end zone. The first scoring opportunity for the Mustangs (2-9) ended when the Mariners forced a fumble and Tyler Ortiz recovered at the 1.
The only other Mustangs scoring chance ended had to score came to an end when Sahr Hemmor leveled Costa Mesa’s Brian Waldron as he was releasing the ball and Nick Gonzalez intercepted.
