Heralds lose, wait

Special to OCVarsity.com

PASADENA The game was a win and you’re in the playoffs scenario for Whittier Christian.

But the Heralds were on the losing end of a defensive battle, 6-0, to CIF-SS Northeast Division ninth-ranked Maranatha of Pasadena on Friday night in an Alpha League game.

Now, Whittier Christian will have to wait and hope for a Northeast Division at-large berth. Playoff teams and seedings will be announced Sunday.

“This was a great football game,” fifth-year coach Jon Caffrey said. “It was a good battle for second (Alpha League).

“I hate to be on the losing end of it.”

Caffrey has never been shut out since he has been the coach at Whittier Christian (5-5, 3-2).

The Heralds defense held Maranatha (7-3, 4-1) to only a 24-yard field goal by Ian Campbell in the first quarter. He also kicked a 35-yard field goal in the third quarter.

Maranatha senior tailback Mark Love ran for a game-high 181 yards on 25 carries.

Whittier Christian junior Mark Edwards did most of the running for the Heralds, rushing for 117 yards on 15 carries.

Edwards also caught three passes for 31 yards.

Heralds junior tailback Nick Camarillo was injured on his first carry and did not play for the remainder of the game.

Heralds senior quarterback Brett Esslinger was 5 of 15 for 97 yards.
