Kennedy stops Mayfair's wild rally on final play
ANAHEIM - Mike Evans' interception on the game's final play allowed Kennedy to escape with a 30-25 victory over Mayfair in Saturday night's game at Western High.
The Fighting Irish (2-2) held a 30-6 halftime edge before Mayfair, behind the receiving trio of Tyler Nicks, Chino Ortiz and Gino Sedano, rallied with three fourth-quarter touchdowns.
The Monsoons (0-4), CIF-Southern Section finalists in 2008, took over on their 17 with 24 seconds left but could not come up with the miracle finish.
"The first half we were nearly flawless," Kennedy coach Brit Johnson said. "The second half we were conservative. Mayfair was going for broke."
Ortiz’s two touchdown catches in the final 3:12 of play were reflective of a different Mayfair attitude in the second half.
"We were playing more with a sense of urgency," Mayfair co-coach Woodie Grayson said.
Andy Peterson’s three touchdown passes and two two-point runs paced Kennedy’s first-half offense.
