OCVarsity.com will have full coverage as No. 1 Mater Dei takes on No. 2 Santa Margarita.

It's No. 1 vs. No. 2 as Mater Dei plays Santa Margarita in a high school boys basketball game tonight at 7:30 at Mater Dei. The top-ranked teams in Orange County and Trinity League rivals also are ranked among the top 30 teams in the nation.

Attendance is anticipated to be so high that a shuttle service to Mater Dei's gym from a remote location will be provided.

Mater Dei is 17-0 overall and 2-0 in the Trinity League, with league victories over St. John Bosco of Bellflower and JSerra. The Monarchs, a CIF State champion last year, are led by the Wear twins, 6-foot-10 junior guard-forwards who last week committed to North Carolina. David Wear is averaging 17 points and 10 rebounds; Travis Wear is averaging 18 points and nine rebounds.

The Monarchs are also getting 15 points a game from 6-8 junior guard Andy Brown, and 10 a game from 6-3 sophomore guard Gary Franklin, who made 10 3-pointers Wednesday in Mater Dei's victory over JSerra.

Santa Margarita (17-1, 2-0) has league victories over Orange Lutheran and Servite. Eagles senior Klay Thompson has been spectacular. Thompson, a 6-6 guard who signed with Washington State, is scoring 21 points a game. He and his brother and teammate Trayce, a 6-4 junior, are sons of former NBA player Mychal Thompson, now a Lakers broadcaster and radio talk-show host.

Zack Zaragoza, a 6-5 senior guard, is scoring 15 points a game for Santa Margarita. Zaragoza scored 25 points with six 3-pointers when the Eagles beat Fairfax of Los Angeles - then ranked No. 1 in California - in a tournament game at Lynwood High on Dec. 29.

Santa Margarita played that game without 6-8 senior center Jaime Serna, an All-County selection last year, who was injured and returned to the lineup only two games ago.

Mater Dei is No. 3 and Santa Margarita is No. 6 in California rankings by calhisports.com. Mater Dei is No. 18 and Santa Margarita is No. 30 in the nation, according to studentsports.com. Santa Margarita's loss was to Campbell Hall of North Hollywood, which is No. 9 in the state and No. 50 in the nation.

The shuttle service will transport spectators from the First American Title complex, at MacArthur Blvd. and the 55 freeway, to Mater Dei beginning at 6 p.m. Return service begins at the conclusion of the game.
