Roundup: JSerra freshman blazes in debut
In her debut Saturday, the 14-year-old blazed to the fifth-fastest time in county history in the 100-yard butterfly at the JSerra Invitational.
McLaughlin, a rising standout with the Mission Viejo Nadadores club, won the butterfly in a meet-record time of 54.70 seconds. The time places McLaughlin just over a second off Tara Thomas’ 2007 county record of 53.54 for Beckman.
McLaughlin has earned two of her three qualification times for June’s U.S. Olympic Trials in the 100 and 200-meter butterfly.
She also won the 100-yard freestyle in a meet-record 51.67 seconds and clocked a 59.22 in an exhibition race in the 100 backstroke.
Mayfield of Pasadena edged Orange Lutheran, 356-351, to claim the girls team title. San Juan Hills freshman Daniel Gloude set a meet record in the 100 backstroke (55.75) and also won the 200 individual medley (2:03.36). JSerra won the boys team title.
At the Villa Park Relays:
Capistrano Valley’s top-ranked boys defended their title by winning all seven varsity events, including five in meet records.
Santa Margarita No. 2 girls claimed their third consecutive title by capturing six of seven races, including one in a meet record.
The Eagles' 400 free relay of Peggy Goonan, Jill Kennedy, Abigael McShane and Sydney Franzen set a meet-record with a 3:45.47.
