MISSION VIEJO- In a season that has already seen several impressive efforts in the shot put, El Toro senior Jake Fraser took it to another level Saturday.

Fraser uncorked a county-leading throw of 60-2¼ to win the competition at the 20th annual ASICS Trabuco Hills Invitational at Trabuco Hills High.

“Going into it, I felt like I had to drive up as hard as I could,” said Fraser. “I felt like it was a good throw, and when I saw it land, I was ecstatic because they aren’t many 60-footers.”

Fraser becomes only the third thrower in the state to surpass the 60-foot mark this season, joining Dos Pueblos senior Nicholas Scarvelis and Jesuit senior Stephan Boals.

“Potentially, my entire throwing team can go 60-feet and I was lucky to get it in today,” he said.

Fellow Charger teammate Brad Bolton (59-8¾) and Newport Harbor junior Steve Michaelsen (56-6) rounded out the top three.

It was another highly impressive day of sprinting for Dana Hills senior Devin Harrison.

He began the day with a late burst in the final 20 meters of the 100 to win in a time of 10.78, edging out Serra’s George Farmer (10.80).

Later, Harrison (21.54) again overcame a slow start with a strong finish, crossing the finish line ahead of Long Beach Wilson senior Kameron White (21.60).

“I kept my form throughout the race and it carried me to where I could out-lean him,” said Harrison, who is now tied for the state lead in the 200. “I gained a lot of confidence because of today and feel like I’m an athlete that is capable at standing out at Arcadia next week.”

For the second straight season, Oxford Academy senior Jonathan Berry-Smith once again became the county leader in the 400 at the Trabuco Hills Invitational, winning the race in a time of 47.92.

“I guess this track has become my lucky track,” Berry-Smith said. "The next couple of weeks of training will be tough and I just feel like I have to get my tempo down at practice and execute my race plan.”

The county lead in the discus changed for the third time in five days, as La Habra senior Will Parsons set his second lifetime best effort this week and claimed victory with a throw of 186-3.

“I came into the meet trying to do the best that I could and got it off better than I did before,” said Parsons, who is currently second in the state.

Newport Harbor junior Ethan Cochran, the previous county leader, was second with a throw of 184-6, with El Toro senior Sullivan Parker (170-8) placing third.

Woodbridge senior Jalen Craver won his second straight 300 hurdles race at an invitational, crossing the finish line in a time of 38.87.

“This week was better as a whole, but my form still needs some work,” Craver said.

Newport Harbor senior Mark Sakioka outlasted El Toro senior Adam Bragg in a jump off at 15 feet, three inches to finish first in a pole vault competition hampered by swirling winds.

“Competing against him (Adam) and trying to improve makes the whole mental aspect of the tough conditions go away,” said Sakioka.

After trading off the lead with teammate Connor Kaddatz throughout much of the early portion of the 3,200, Dana Hills senior Ricardo Campuzano found a nice burst over the final 600 meters to post the victory in a time of 9:19.40.

“It was my first two mile of the season and I’m happy to be out here and content with my time,” said Campuzano, who battled a right leg injury at the beginning of the season. “The training is going real well and I have to be patient to get where I want to be.”

Kaddatz (9:21.87) also had a nice final lap finish to place second, with California senior Jon Bazinet (9:24.11) coming in third.

In the 110 hurdles, Huntington Beach junior Ramon Vargas continued a strong early season, winning the invitational race in a time 14.84.

“I wanted to get a good race before Arcadia next week,” said Vargas, currently second in the county in the 110 hurdles. “I felt good today and have been working on my technique and being mentally strong.”

El Toro junior Justin Schneider (22-5½) was the winner of the long jump, Canyon junior Cody Crampton (6-4) was first in the high jump, and Godinez (3:36.67) placed first in the 1,600 Sprint Medley.
