Gilchrist helps Foothill blow past Canyon
ORANGE - Foothill quarterback Jack Gilchrist passed for 180 yards and two touchdowns as the No. 12-ranked Knights defeated Canyon, 49-0, in a Century League finale for both teams at El Modena High on Friday night.
Foothill (8-2, 5-1 Century League) forced the Comanches (3-7, 1-5) into three turnovers, including a 35-yard interception return by Bobby Okereke that gave Foothill a commanding 20-0 lead in the second quarter.
Canyon’s Garrett Bell returned the ensuing kickoff 60 yards to set up the Comanches at the Foothill 40. Canyon drove to the 22, but lost a fumble.
Three plays later, Gilchrist connected with Jarrell Moss on a screen pass that he took 70 yards for a TD to put the game out of reach.
Moss finished with four catches for 100 yards.
He wasn’t the only Moss to get into the scoring act, but he did assist his brother Julian. Both Moss brothers were deep to field a punt late in the third quarter. Jarrell caught the punt and was being tackled by the Canyon defenders. While he was being held up, he flipped the ball back to Julian, who took it 50 yards to the end zone for the Knights’ final score.
Foothill will be the No. 2 playoff seed from the Century League. Its only two losses came against league champion Villa Park and Empire League champion Tustin.
Canyon was playing without starting QB Corey Elsasser, who was hurt in last week’s game against Villa Park.
Freshman Jason Harmon made his first start and completed 5 of 9 passes for 16 yards and an interception.
Troy Kurtz led the Comanches with 60 yards on 15 carries. Rob Mallen West carried seven times for 36 yards.
