The Calhoun Wrap-up for football semifinals
Congrats, we all survived Fog Bowls Friday night and now with the fog finally clearing, we have the finals for the CIF-SS football championships.
What a run it has been. What started all the way back in August …. waaaaaaaayyyyy back in August, is finally ending. This calls for a celebration.
Let’s take a look at the week
Foothill proved to be the team nobody wanted to play. The Knights probably should have won, but the Edison defense held them to 3 field goals in the second half. One touchdown here or even two and we’re talking about the Knights going to Angel Stadium
Credit goes to that Edison defense for keeping the game close.
Now, for the Villa Park-Tustin game … I picked Villa Park to win (that’s why you should always read the Calhoun Countdown). The Spartans did it in typical Spartans fashion … in the fourth quarter.
This is probably the sixth game that Villa Park has won in the fourth quarter.
This sets up a rematch between Edison and Vila Park. The teams met in September with Edison winning 27-7. A lot has changed since then. Villa Park has some serious momentum. This is going to be a great game. Check back next week for my prediction.
One prediction I got wrong was the Mater Dei-St. Bonaventure game. (can’t get them all right).
I also didn’t get the Long Beach Poly-St. John Bosco pick right either (don’t hold it against me).
This sets up Long Beach Poly vs. Mater Dei in a CIF final. Just like the old times.
How many of you had Long Beach Poly in the finals? What happens if LBP knocks off a second consecutive Trinity League team? will the world slip off of its axis?
Corona del Mar hasn’t a point since third quarter of its game against Beckman on Nov. 2. That sums up why CdM is back in the Southern Division final.
Up next is Garden Grove. The Argonauts are averaging 40 points in the playoffs. And there we have the classic battle. Can Grove’s offense score on CdM’s defense?
It is going to be a fun week. I can see the end.
