Mater Dei got a measure of revenge by beating Foothill, 10-0, in the championship game of the Foothill Roundtable Invitational on Saturday at Hillview School in Santa Ana.

The game was called off after five innings because of the mercy rule.

Foothill had beaten the Monarchs, 11-3 and 6-3, in the finals of the Foothill Roundtable Invitational the past two years.

"We came to play," Mater Dei coach Doug Myers said. "We've come in second about five times in this tournament, and we've been on the other end of getting mercied here, so we understand what it was like."

The Monarchs, who went 4-1 at the prestigious Tournament of Champions in Bullhead City, Ariz., last week, pounded out 12 hits against the Knights. Florida-bound catcher Brittany Schutte led the way, going 4 for 4 with three RBIs.

"It feels so much better because we came up short in (Bullhead City)," Schutte said. "We should have done a lot better, especially, with the stats we had. It was good to finally win this tournament since we haven't won it the past two years. It was a good feeling, especially, to mercy it."

Mater Dei put five runs on the board in the top of the first inning. Schutte delivered a run-scoring single, freshman sensation Brianne Matthews had a two-run double and the Monarchs added two unearned runs.

"We've had a problem this year of leaving runners on base, and this time we didn't," Myers said. "We ran the bases pretty well. And Brittany came through with four hits for us today, so we had a lot of kids come through for us today."

Matthews did a number on the Knights' potent offense, shutting them out one one hit and striking out eight in five innings to nail down the victory.

"I just go out there and try to do my job for my team," Matthews said. "Well, I know Hallie Wilson from Firecrackers. She's a great hitter. And then Taylor (Cantillo), their third hitter, she's another good hitter. I just try to do my best and get the pitches in there."

Mater Dei's leadoff hitter Karina Cervantes got on base twice and scored twice, freshman Alyssa Yglesias had two hits and scored a run, Matthews had two hits and first baseman Amy Nunez had two hits, a run and two RBIs.

Mmater Dei upped its record to 9-1-1, while the Knights dipped to 6-3-1.
