ANAHEIM Western scored touchdowns on its first seven possessions en route to a 49-0 victory over Los Amigos in a CIF-SS Southern Division first-round game.
Despite having the ball for only 56 seconds through the game’s first 19 minutes, Western held a 14-0 lead on touchdown runs of 44 and 69 yards by Derek Orman and Mookie Cooksie, respectively.
Los Amigos used a ball-control offense, with its first three drives at least 10 plays long.
“They executed early on,” Western coach Toby Howell said of the Lobos. “We thought if we could get the ball, we could score.”
The game’s turning point came when Los Amigos (4-7) lost a fumble with 5:07 left in the first half. The Pioneers marched 58 yards in six plays, capped by Orman’s 3-yard run.
Cooksie added a 40-yard touchdown reception from Johnny Trujillo, and Mike Medina opened the second half with a 52-yard kickoff return on an onside kick and Ruben Ortega scored on a 77-yard run.
“We had a little more firepower,” Howell said. “It was a nice start (to the postseason).”
The Pioneers (9-1-1) will play Pacifica next Friday night in the second round.
