Anaheim's defense produces shutout

Special to the Register

BUENA PARK Anaheim overcame multiple penalties in the first half and an interception on the first play of the game to shut out Sunny Hills, 28-0, in a nonleague game Friday at Buena Park High.

Matt Contreras ran for 217 yards and three touchdowns and Anaheim's defense held the Lancers to negative yardage in the first half and just 53 yards for the game.

"We started off really slow and the penalties slowed us down, but we got going in the second half and fixed some things," Contreras said.

Sunny Hill's Jae Byum picked off Vince Gomez's pass on Anaheim's first play from scrimmage and returned it to the Pioneers' 48-yard line but the Lancers couldn't capitalize.

Anaheim shut down the running game and held the Lancers to just one play for positive yardage in the first half.

After a slow start, Contreras broke a 26-yard run and scored from 34 yards out two plays later. Then he capped a nine-play, penalty plagued drive with a 15-yard score to make it 14-0 and added a 13-yard yard score with 7:07 left in the fourth quarter.
