SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO - St. Margaret’s (2-0) continued its winning streak, but in very ugly fashion in its 41-0 victory over Army & Navy Academy (2-1) of Carlsbad.
Penalties and fumbles marred the Tartans offense in the first quarter.
“Our defense was nails, spot on,” said Coach Harry Welch of St. Margaret. “We weren’t ready offensively. It was ugly and one of the worst games in my two years here.”
The Tartans scored its first touchdown early in the first quarter not so much on its offensive play but as beneficiaries of Army & Navy penalties.
After an early fumble in the second quarter, with Tartan junior running back John Murayama carried the ball three times for 23 yards to set up a 2-yard touchdown run by senior quarterback David Mothander.
Late in the first half, Mothander led the team downfield twice with a 49-yard touchdown pass to junior JT Carpenter and, after a fumble recovery, a 21-yard pass to senior Alex Brolick for the Tartan’s third touchdown.
But even after two more touchdowns in the second half, Welch was not pleased. “We should have been running the clock out and had the freshmen in there sooner.”
St. Margaret’s winning streak now stands at 30.
