The Aztecs cruise to a 49-6 triumph over Centennial of Compton.

PLACENTIA - Esperanza's offense is finally keeping up with its defense.

For a second consecutive week the Aztecs lighted up the scoreboard, this time it was a 49-6 victory over Compton Centennial in a nonleague game on Friday at Valencia High. (Full game stats.)

"We looked good in spots, but we were a little inconsistent," Esperanza coach Bill Pendelton said. "We did enough to get the win, and you have to be happy with that."

It took a quarter of the game for Esperanza (4-1), which is coming off a bye week, to shake off some rust and break the game open.

The Aztecs homecoming celebration got started early when senior Jared Moore found the end zone on touchdown runs of 34, 4, 3 and 2 yards in the first half.

"We wanted to set the tempo early," Moore said. "I didn't play against Mount Miguel, and then we had our bye last week so I was really itching to play… The O-line created a lot of holes, and I just to hit them at full speed."

Moore led the offensive attack on the ground with 92 rushing yards.

After a shaky startDrew Huusfeldt got loose and connected on 5 of 11 passes for 120 yards and three touchdowns in the second half. His last three passes were all touchdowns.

"We can throw the ball a little this year," Pendelton said. "It's not what we usually do, but we can if we have to."

The Aztecs defense was as stingy as ever holding Compton Centennial (1-4) to just 95 offensive yards.

Everyone got in on the pass rushing action half with six total sacks by five players, only Lukas Lopez had a pair.

"We can't seem to get that shutout," Pendelton said. "But we've only given up one touchdown in every game that we have played this year."

Esperanza got two fumble recoveries and an interception from Dane Poole.
