Chargers hold off Barons

COSTA MESA Edison defeated Fountain Valley for the third consecutive season to retain “The Bell.”  However, both teams were faced with tense moments both during and after Friday’s 22-13 Edison  victory at Orange Coast College.

Fountain Valley senior defensive end Sam Yasin was knocked unconscious during a kickoff in the third quarter. He was motionless for several minutes before he was eventually carted off and taken to Fountain Valley Hospital. Coach John Shipp said that Yasin had a concussion and should recover.

The Barons fell to 5-4 and 1-3 in league.  After the final the whistle was blown and the Chargers (6-3, 3-1) raced over to get the coveted “Bell”, quarterback Nick Crissman was on the ground being attended to by the team trainers.

After about 10 minutes, Crissman was finally moved to the bench. Later, he got up and with his mother Jody walked off the field.   “He got hit a lot tonight,” Edison coach Dave White said of Crissman. “I think he was really hot and tired and a little dehydrated and totally exhausted, but he should be all right though.”

Crissman completed 16 of 26 passes for 206 yards and two touchdowns in the victory.

Edison heads into next week’s game against Newport Harbor in control of its own destiny for the Sunset League title.

“We have to win to next week to be league champ,” White said.

Edison, Newport Harbor and Esperanza are  tied for first place at 3-1. Edison owns the tiebreaker against Esperanza via its 9-7 victory Oct. 29.
