No. 1 Edison wins, 48-0, to cruise into playoffs
WESTMINSTER - No. 1 Edison took away any thoughts of a letdown early in its victory over last-place Marina, a 48-0 blowout at Boswell Field in its final Sunset League game Friday night.
Playing without starting quarterback Matt Viles, who Coach Dave White said will be back behind center in next week’s first round of the CIF-SS playoffs, the Chargers (10-0, 5-0) jumped out early on the legs of running backs Wade Houston and Davion Orphey.
Orphey broke two long touchdown runs, of 62 and 52 yards, and Houston ran for 43 yards and a score in the first quarter to help Edison jump out to a 31-0 lead.
The Vikings (1-9, 0-5) had a strong defensive stand in the Chargers’ first drive, but two sloppy plays, a bad snap recovered for a touchdown in the end zone and a interception returned for a score, contributed in the early Edison offensive burst.
Chargers backup quarterback Stephen Andrew, who started in place of Viles, played the first half and finished with 55 yards and an interception.
Running backs Orphey finished with two touchdowns and 114 yards. Houston had 79 yards and a score.
The Vikings’ bright spot was the play of sophomore running Alex Waked, who rushed for a hard-fought 45 yards.
