Selway, Villa Park slam El Dorado
PLACENTIA – Luke Selway scored 22 points and Lamont Tyler added 10 as Villa Park took a 67-45 victory over host El Dorado in a Century League boys basketball game Friday night.
The Spartans (13-4, 3-0) built a big lead in the first quarter, limiting El Dorado to one 3-pointer and three free throws while taking a 20-6 lead. The 6-foot-10 Tyler kept the Golden Hawks from doing much damage inside, and threw several outlet passes to set up easy baskets on the other end.
"He does so much, scoring, rebounding, and he's such a good passer when they do double team him," Villa Park coach Kevin Reynolds said. "We have to play inside-out with him. He's such a force and he's such a mismatch against most teams, so our focus is always trying to get it inside to him first."
Trailing 42-20 at halftime, El Dorado (9-9, 0-4) made two runs at the Spartans, but could get no closer than 13 points in the second half. The Golden Hawks scored the first nine points of the third quarter to make it 42-29 before Selway hit from inside with 4:30 left in the period. El Dorado closed the gap to 13 again early in the fourth, at 50-37, on a 3-pointer by Damen Salha.
"They are a good team, and they are well coached, and they are going to make runs," Reynolds said.
El Dorado's Jason Askins hit two free throws with 5:47 to go, and Selway made two field goals in 13 seconds to snuff out the Golden Hawks' comeback hopes.
"You know, you go to your guy, and Luke's our guy," Reynolds said. "We have two sophomores and two juniors who start for us, and we're in a pretty good spot."
Aaron Rivera led El Dorado with 12 points.
