Ameer Webb of Tustin put his talent on display against some of the best in the state at the CIF-Southern Section Division III track and field championships Saturday at Cerritos College.

Matched against two of the state’s top runners in the 200 meters, including state-leader Randall Carroll of Cathedral of Los Angeles, Webb put forth his best effort of the season.

The senior was nearly stride-for-stride with the UCLA-bound Carroll early on and hung tough throughout, ultimately crossing the finish line in third.

His wind-aided time of 21.24 seconds was the best by an Orange County runner this spring under all conditions, and fifth best among all runners throughout all four Southern Section divisions.

Carroll, the defending state champion, captured the 200 in 20.93, the third-fastest time in the nation this year.

Webb now joins the county’s qualifiers for Masters on Friday at Cerritos College. Running events start at 6 p.m.; field events start at 4:30. Webb can qualify for state by a win or meeting the qualifying time of 21.57.

Webb also was a standout in football, rushing for 1,119 yards and 15 touchdowns.

Mission Viejo senior-to-be receiver Joey Branker will also be part of the 200 field at Masters.

Tournament director and University golf coach Michael Bova said more than 70 of the top boys and girls players from around the county have submitted an entry. A separate championship will be awarded in both the boys and girls division.

Bova wants this to be a high-caliber event, so he would like to have only those that can shoot 80 or below enter. Interested participants can contact Bova at mbova1@yahoo.com.
