Notes: Laguna Beach stays hot in Division 2
Riley Thomas scored four goals and Maxx McCarter made 13 saves as Laguna Beach's boys water polo team defeated visiting Murrieta Valley, 11-6, in a nonleague match Monday.
The Breakers, ranked second in Division 2 to Agoura, won their eighth consecutive game to improve to 12-6 overall.
Murrieta Valley is ranked fifth in Division 2.
MATER DEI TO BE TESTED?
Mater Dei’s record winning streak in boys water polo could encounter a formidable test the next two weeks.
Or the Monarchs could continue to roll as they did Saturday in a 13-5 victory against Corona del Mar, their CIF-SS record 63rd consecutive triumph.
Mater Dei (15-0) plays at reigning North Coast Section Division 1 champion Miramonte of Orinda on Thursday and then competes at the North-South Challenge in Atherton on Friday and Saturday.
The two-time defending Division 1 champions return the following week to play host to Murrieta Valley on Oct. 22 and Division 1 rivals Loyola of Los Angeles and Los Alamitos on Oct. 24 and Oct. 26, respectively.
“We’ve got a span of (about) eight days where we play a lot of high-level games,” Mater Dei coach Chris Segesman said Saturday. “I think we’re going to be battle-tested. Two weeks from now, we’re going to be in good position and looking forward to CIF.”
Mater Dei’s final week of the regular-season also might be challenging. The Monarchs play Long Beach.
MATCH OF DAY: TUESDAY
Mission Viejo (12-7, 3-0) plays host to Tesoro (12-7, 3-0) at 5 p.m. for first place in the Division 3 Sea View League.
