Mater Dei triumphs
In what probably wasn't its most-inspired performance of the season, the Mater Dei boys basketball team defeated Westchester of Los Angeles, 63-60, in the finale of the Nike Extravaganza at Mater Dei.
Stanley Johnson scored 21 points for the Monarchs (24-1) in the late Saturday night game. He had nine in the fourth quarter and was 11 for 18 at the free-throw line.
It was tied, 42-42, going into the fourth quarter. Westchester (21-6) did not score a basket until Darnell Brown hit with 3:43 to go. Mater Dei made 14 free throws in the fourth quarter to Westchester's three.
In calhisports.com's California top 20, Mater Dei is No. 2, behind Long Beach Poly. Westchester is No. 17.
Elijah Brown scored 19 for the Monarchs.
Matthew Grant led Westchester with 23 points.
