Kickoff 2012: Mater Dei preview

OCVARSITY.COM

Last season record: 4-6 overall, 2-3 league

Postseason: 2010, lost to Mission Viejo, 42-21, CIF-Southern Section Pac-5 Division semifinals

Coach: Bruce Rollinson (24th season, 218-70-2)

Home stadium: Santa Ana Stadium

Outlook: Mater Dei came just a play or two from making the playoffs. The Monarchs did beat eventual Pac-5 and state champion Santa Margarita, but finished in fourth place, one position below qualifying for a playoff berth. This year’s team looks ready for a comeback, and was No. 3 in the Register/OCVarsity.com preseason rankings. “We do have a number of experienced and talented players returning that we can build around,” Mater Dei coach Bruce Rollinson said. Ryan McMahon returns at quarterback after an all-league season in 2011. Other all-league returnees are receiver Thomas Duarte, and Jameson Field and Jonathan Lockett, both receivers/defensive backs. If the Monarchs can develop a running attack, they likely would contend for the league championship.

Factoid: Mater Dei missed the playoffs last year for the first time since 1986.

School record: 470-176-15

PLAYERS TO WATCH

WR Thomas Duarte: All-Orange County second team last year as a junior, Duarte was a standout during summer passing tournaments. He received scholarship offers from Colorado, Oregon, Washington and others.

QB Ryan McMahon: He committed to USC for baseball. But his immediate future in football looks good, too, after McMahon played well during the summer.
