Goalie McQuin Baron made 16 saves and Anthony Daboub and Jon Walters each scored four goals to help Mater Dei's top-ranked boys water polo team beat No. 3 El Toro, 12-5, in the finals of North-South Challenge in Atherton on Saturday.

While the final score points to another decisive victory for the Monarchs, they faced rough waters early.

El Toro (20-3) led, 2-0, in first period and trailed, 5-4, at halftime.

The Monarchs (22-0) outscored the Chargers, 7-1, in the second half to win the tournament for the second consecutive season.

"I thought we responded excellent," Mater Dei coach Chris Segesman said. "El Toro started the game really well. ... (We) kept (our) composure and (we) kept with the system."

Joey Fuentes scored four goals and Garrett Danner made 14 saves for El Toro.

The Chargers finished 0 for 4 on the power play but El Toro coach Don Stoll was pleased with his team's performance at the tournament Saturday.

"Very pleased with my team today," he said. "We beat a very good Miramonte team (in the semifinals, 15-6)."

Funetes scored six goals against Miramonte, Northern California's top seeded in the tournament.

Stoll said he anticipated Mater Dei would make a surge in the second half.

"You know it is coming," he said. "They're gigantic and they're fast."

Mater Dei extended its winning streak to 39 matches, which ties the Monarchs with Long Beach Wilson (1996-98) for the fifth-longest streak in CIF-Southern Section history. The section and county record is 45 held by Corona del Mar (1968-70).

"It's pretty awesome to be up with those teams," Segesman said. "But if we don't win our last game (this season), it's doesn't mean much."

Mater Dei defeated Agoura, 18-8, in the semifinals. Sophomore James Walters netted a season-high five goals.

In a nonleague match:

University 14, No. 9 San Clemente 10: Ryan Hudash scored six goals to lead the visiting Trojans (13-6) to the upset.
