Keala King said getting a rebound comes down to two elements.
"Desire," he said, "and a lot of hard work."
King worked hard and had plenty of that desire Tuesday. He grabbed a school-record 26 rebounds and scored 26 points to lead Mater Dei to an 80-60 victory over Los Alamitos in a CIF-Southern Section Division 1AA quarterfinal playoff game at Mater Dei.
Mater Dei (26-1) will play Rancho Verde of Moreno Valley (26-3) in a semifinal Friday at Ocean View High.
The Monarchs played Tuesday without senior starting point guard Tommy Stangl, who had surgery Tuesday to repair a stress fracture in his left foot. He has a slight chance to return if Mater Dei goes deep into the state playoffs.
King's 26 rebounds surpassed the 25 rebounds two-time CIF player of the year Tom Lewis had against Dominguez of Compton in the 1984-85 season.
"Keala King was phenomenal," Los Alamitos coach Cary Kutzke said.
Los Alamitos (22-7) stayed with Mater Dei until the third quarter. The Griffins' Tim Chung had 18 points at halftime, and made five 3-pointers in the first half. But in the second half, he went scoreless as he missed all seven of his shots with Mater Dei's Gary Franklin covering him.
Los Alamitos, backed by a large and vocal blue-shirted group of students, had a 36-35 lead in the first minute of the third quarter. Mater Dei's Tyler Lamb made a 3-pointer to put Mater Dei on top, 38-36, King made a jump hook in the key and followed with a finger-roll, and Mater Dei had a six-point lead. Los Alamitos made five turnovers in the third quarter, in which they made only 2 of 10 shots, while Mater Dei did not make a turnover and was 8 for 19 from the floor, and the Monarchs took a 56-42 lead into the fourth quarter.
Franklin scored 21 points, and Lamb scored 13 and blocked four shots.
James Walker III scored 22 for Los Alamitos. The Griffins' Jack Haley had 13 rebounds before fouling out in the fourth quarter.
All semifinal games are Friday. When two teams meet after the first round of the playoffs, the team with the fewest number of playoff home games is the home team. If the teams have had an equal number of playoff home games, an online, computerized coin flip determines the home team.
