The Monarchs have no trouble against Garces.

SANTA ANA- Mater Dei's girls basketball team continued its rampage through the postseason with an 85-26 victory over Garces of Bakersfield in the first round of the CIF Southern California Division II Regionals on Tuesday night at Mater Dei High.

The Monarchs have beaten their five postseason opponents by an average of 49.6 points per game. Laguna Hills came the closest to Mater Dei, losing to the Monarchs by 38 points in the CIF-SS Division II-A quarterfinals.

Sophomore sensation Kaleena Lewis had another huge night for the Monarchs, outscoring the entire Garces team with a game-high 32 points. She was 6 of 13 from 3-point range and she had nine rebounds and three assists.

Sophomore Alexyz Vaioletama had 15 points and nine rebounds off the bench for Mater Dei.

"Being where we are, No. 1 and all those rankings, and the target is on us, we don't talk about it," Mater Dei coach Kevin Kiernan said. "We just work them to death in practice. We work really hard in practice and we just focus on the next game. We just focused on (Garces of) Bakersfield. We didn't talk about Brea. We didn't talk about Edison. Now we will focus on the winner of that Edison-West Hills game."

The Monarchs dominated every facet of the game. Ther defense produced 30 turnovers and Mater Dei out-rebounded the Rams, 42-15. Garces only had three offensive rebounds, and two of those were team rebounds.

The Monarchs had a 51-point lead after three quarters, so the entire fourth quarter was played with a running clock. Caitlin Bernardin had 11 points to lead the Rams.

Mater Dei (31-0), ranked No. 1 in the state by CalHiSports.com and No. 4 in the nation by ESPN RISE, plays host to Edison, a 53-41 winner over West Hills of Santee, in the Regional semifinals on Thursday at 7 p.m. at Mater Dei High.

The Rams, who lost to Hanford, 73-44, in the CIF Central Section Division II finals on Friday, finished the season 30-3.
