Santiago gets defensive against Bolsa Grande

FOR OCVARSITY.COM

GARDEN GROVE - Santiago boys basketball coach Al Robertson is pretty clear about what he wants from his players: They must play defense.

The Cavaliers gave him what he wanted Friday night as they used their press defense to great success while beating Bolsa Grande, 69-54, at Bolsa Grande High.

With the victory, the Cavaliers (12-8, 5-1) extended their league lead to two games.

The Matadors (7-13, 3-3) came into the game tied for second with Garden Grove, but both teams lost Friday.

The Cavaliers extended their pressure defense the entire game, defending from end-line to end-line, and made sure they kept the pace of the game frenetic.

"Everybody on the team needs to play defense. Defense, defense, defense," Roberston said. "We play that first and then we can talk about offense later.

"We get up in their face and pressure the ball and want those turnovers."

The style the Cavaliers play allows them to get out in transition, and that's where senior guard Alex Robertson thrives.

The Matadors tried to deny Robertson the ball, and when he did catch it in the first half, they sent a trap at him.

Robertson did a nice job of finding the open man in the first half, who always seemed to be sophomore Francisco Arroyo. Arroyo made a living off mid-range jump shots, and finished with 18 points.

Robertson made sure his Cavaliers stayed in control, although the Matadors made things interesting in the fourth, closing the score to four after being down by 12 at half.

Robertson finished with 18 points and seven assists in the victory.

Anthony Ho had 11 for the losing Matadors.
