Roundup: Cypress holds off Los Amigos
In Division 6 wild-card games:
Cypress 8, Los Amigos 7: Freshman Sarah Smith scored the go-ahead goal on a penalty shot with 5:12 left in the fourth and Rachel Privett made a save with 10 seconds left as the visiting Centurions (19-8) held off the Lobos (15-10) at Garden Grove.
Privett made six of her 18 saves in the final period to help Cypress advance to Thursday’s first-round game at No. 4 Chadwick.
“We put it in her hands,” Cypress coach Ryan Poole said of Privett, a 5-foot-11 junior who leads the county with 380 saves.
Dana Ramos drew the penalty shot that led to Smith’s conversion. Ramos and Aimee Espey each scored three goals for Cypress.
Los Amigos junior goalie Diane Ho nearly matched Privett, racking up 14 saves and nine steals. Lennon Muschinski led the Lobos with three goals.
The Lobos trailed, 7-4, early in the third period but scored three consecutive goals to tie the score, 7-7, going to the fourth.
"We just couldn't finish," Los Amigos coach Manny Lepe said. "But we're young. ... It was a good game. I'm happy."
In Division 1 wild-card round games:
Huntington Beach 18, Estancia 3: Sam Preston scored seven goals to lead the visiting Oilers (15-13), who play today at top-seeded Santa Barbara.
Ventura 13, Esperanza 12: Ashley Diaz had four goals, four assists and four steals for the host Aztecs (13-16).
In Division 4 wild-card round:
Buena Park 9, Whittier 8: Araceli Juarez scored six goals to lead the visiting Coyotes (14-12), who play at top-seeded Bonita of La Verne on Thursday.
Mission Viejo 17, San Marino 9: Katie Hansen scored eight goals and Lindsey Campbell added five to lead the host Diablos (10-18), who play at Oxnard on Thursday.
In Division 2 first round:
Trabuco Hills 10, Bell Gardens 9: Julie de Arakal scored four goals and Lauren Dixon made nine saves at Brenda Villa Aquatic Center to lead the visiting Mustangs (15-12), who play No. 4 seed Mater Dei on Thursday.
Mater Dei 20, Roosevelt 7: Mackenzie Barr scored a season-high seven goals and Brianna Daboub added four to lead the host Monarchs (20-9).
San Clemente 7, Long Beach Poly 6: Cassidy Smithson scored three goals and Makenna Smith added two for the visiting Tritons (13-16), who play at No. 2 seeded Santa Margarita on Thursday.
Rosary 12, Norco 7: Lizzie Louwers and Maddy Johnson each scored three goals at Fullerton College to lead the Royals (13-13), who play Montebello on Thursday.
Dana Hills 14, Schurr 2: Molly Wilbur scored five goals and Madison Baba added three at Aliso Niguel to lead the Dolphins, who play Long Beach Wilson in the second round Thursday.
