Cypress follows Brito's lead over Kennedy
ANAHEIM - The persistent running attack of Cypress’ Jake Brito was too much for Kennedy to handle on Friday night at Western High’s Handel Stadium.
Brito carried 36 times in the Centurions’ 28-7 victory over their Empire League rival.
The senior running back amassed 257 yards, scoring two touchdowns. Brito seemed to wear down the Kennedy defense as the game went on, with his four longest runs coming in the second half.
Cypress quarterback Jesse Dages directed the Centurions’ offense, passing for 55 yards and rushing for 31. Dages had two touchdowns, one passing and one rushing, but threw two interceptions.
The Kennedy offense was led by running back Darius Miles, who carried 15 times for 135 yards and a touchdown. Kennedy sophomore Troy Cochran, who was forced into action at quarterback after a recent injury to the Fighting Irish’s previous starter, completed seven passes for 61 yards.
After a scoreless first quarter, Cypress (4-2, 2-0) scored twice in the second period on a pair of 5-yard rushing touchdowns from Brito and Dages.
Miles got Kennedy (1-6, 0-3) on the board early in the second half when he turned what looked like a loss to a 23-yard touchdown. Two Cypress defenders had their hands on Miles in the backfield, but he escaped and reversed his field, getting around the right edge and going up the sideline to draw Kennedy within 14-7.
The threat did not last long as Brito broke free for a 66-yard touchdown run on the third play of the ensuing drive.
Dages added the Centurions’ final touchdown in the fourth quarter when he hit Quinten Pounds for a 9-yard score.
